Ask the Experts - Chances of saving a life
What are the chances of saving a life with CPR? Does it always work?
The chances of saving a life with CPR is fully dependant upon the success of the Chain of Survival. That is, you must have the four links in the "Chain of Survival" (early access, early CPR, early defibrillation & early advanced life support) in order to maximize survivability from a cardiac arrest. CPR alone does not save lives. Calling 911 alone does not save lives. Providing Advanced Life Support alone does not save lives. You must have the four links in the Chain support each other to save lives. However, CPR itself does buy the patient up to 8 minutes of oxygenation. Beyond that, survivability using CPR alone is very dismal.
